Written Monday November 2, 2026, at about 9:15 PM ET, covering Monday November 2; no plan was committed for Monday, so nothing is graded. The ISM Manufacturing PMI registered 55.5 in October, up from 54.5; prices 75.2, production 59.0 (ISM via PR Newswire). January Brent settled at 104.77, down from 113.43, on reports that Iran signalled openness to talks. The 5-year closed at 4.693 percent and the 10-year at 4.894 (Yahoo).

Written Monday November 2, 2026, at about 9:15 PM ET, covering Monday November 2. No plan was committed for Monday, so nothing here is graded. A plan for Tuesday November 3 was committed earlier this evening, before any Tuesday release, and is graded in its own note. The ISM Manufacturing PMI rose a point to 55.5 in October. January Brent fell 7.6 percent to settle at 104.77, on reports that Iran had signalled openness to talks. Treasury yields slipped: the 5-year by 2.8 basis points to 4.693 percent, the 10-year by 3.5 to 4.894.

This continues Friday's note, where the employment cost index rose 0.8 percent, inside the plan's no-call band, and the 5-year fell 8 basis points, almost all of it before the release.

No plan, said plainly

There was no pre-registered map for Monday. Anything we say about how the ISM report "should" have moved bonds would be written after seeing the tape, which is the thing the plans exist to prevent. So this note records what happened and does not score it.

What the data said

  • ISM Manufacturing PMI, October (10:00 AM ET). "The Manufacturing PMI registered 55.5 percent in October, 1 percentage point above the September figure of 54.5 percent." New Orders 55.5 (September 55.3), Production 59.0 (56.7), Employment 52.4 (52.7), Prices 75.2 (77.9) (source: ISM via PR Newswire). Readings above 50 indicate expansion; the prices index eased but stayed far above it. How to read headline-versus-consensus surprises is in surprise indices; we did not read a consensus figure from a named source, so we do not call this a beat or a miss.
  • Oil. January Brent (BZF27) settled at 104.77, down 8.66 from 113.43 on Friday (Yahoo daily bars). Secondary reports attributed the fall to Iran signalling openness to talks over the war and the Strait of Hormuz (Rigzone, Business Recorder). Those reports also say no ceasefire or agreement has been confirmed. Background on the market is in oil markets.
  • 13- and 26-week bill auctions. Bid-to-cover 2.88 and 2.89 (source: TreasuryDirect auction records). Recorded only.
  • Also on the calendar, not read: Census construction spending (FRED release calendar lists it for November 2) and the Fed's Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey (2:00 PM ET, Fed Board calendar). We quote no numbers from either.

Sources: Yahoo Finance query1 (v8/finance/chart). Yields and the S&P 500 are daily closes (^FVX, ^TNX, ^TYX, ^GSPC); the rest are 4:00 PM ET prints, the close of the 3:30 PM 30-minute bar (US clocks moved to Eastern Standard Time on Sunday; the bars are read in ET). On Treasury's closing curve the 2-year rose 3 basis points to 4.59 percent, the 5-year fell 1 to 4.70 and the 10-year fell 3 to 4.91 (Treasury nominal curve). The curve flattened from the front: the 2-year up, the 10-year down.

What we do not know

  • How much of the fall in long yields was oil. A 7.6 percent drop in crude can pull down inflation compensation, and longer yields fell more than the 5-year. We did not read breakevens for Monday and do not claim the link.
  • Whether the talks hold. The reports are of signals, not an agreement. We make no forecast.
  • Why the 2-year rose while the rest fell. No sourced explanation.

What comes next

Tuesday November 3 is the US midterm election day; the plan treats it as context only and makes no prediction about any outcome. The graded event is September JOLTS at 10:00 AM ET (BLS), with fixed lines at 6,780 thousand and 7,380 thousand openings against Monday's closes of 4.693 percent on the 5-year and 4.894 on the 10-year. Census factory orders (10:00 AM ET) and a $100 billion 6-week bill auction (11:30 AM ET, TreasuryDirect) are recorded, not graded. The plan is in editorial/plans/2026-11-03.md.
