A plain-English guide to a pre-PPI tape.

Producer Price Index for Final Demand: measures average change in selling prices received by domestic producers. Three headline aggregates (goods, services, construction); the desk watches core "final demand less foods, energy, and trade services". PPI matters for two reasons: (1) some components feed core PCE more directly than CPI does (portfolio management fees, healthcare services); (2) PPI is a lead indicator on cost pressure that has not yet flowed to the consumer. A pre-PPI Wednesday tape has three consistent features: position-clearing on front-end, DXY consolidation, gold and silver ranges compressing. Elasticity of DXY move to surprise: linear inside +/- 0.3 percentage point band, quadratic outside it. Three signals to read on the Wednesday close.

Wednesday's analysis piece is the live example. The tape consolidated inside Tuesday's break-of-99 range, hike odds held at 60 percent, and the setup into Thursday's August PPI print became the operative variable. This reference piece is the framework for reading a pre-PPI Wednesday tape: what to look for, what the release itself will price, and how the read differs from a pre-CPI setup.

What the PPI actually measures

The Producer Price Index for Final Demand measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. It has three headline aggregates: final demand goods, final demand services, and final demand construction. The core aggregate the desk actually watches is "final demand less foods, energy, and trade services", which strips the two most volatile inputs plus the retail margin swing.

PPI matters for two reasons. First, some of its components feed the Fed's preferred inflation gauge (core PCE) more directly than the CPI does. Healthcare services, portfolio management fees, and airfare all get pulled from PPI or PPI-like sources into the PCE. That is why a hot PPI can move core PCE more than the CPI move it accompanies. Second, PPI is a lead indicator on cost pressure that hasn't yet flowed to the consumer: a big move in final-demand goods with services stable is the early warning sign of a supply-side inflation impulse that CPI will print two to four months later.

See our PPI-vs-CPI framework for the full decomposition and the specific PPI-to-PCE mapping the Cleveland Fed publishes.

What the tape looks like on a pre-PPI Wednesday

A typical pre-PPI Wednesday has three consistent features. First, position-clearing on the front-end of the curve: 2-year yield ranges tighten as OIS-visible bets go flat into the Thursday morning print. Second, DXY consolidation in a 10 to 15 pip range around the prior close, with the ranges tightening through the New York afternoon. Third, gold and silver ranges compressing as real-yield expectations get parked pending the data.

The market prices roughly 60 to 65 percent of the pre-release consensus by Wednesday's close. That means the residual move on the Thursday print is roughly 35 to 40 percent of the total headline reaction. In practice a print in line with consensus produces a 5 to 10 pip DXY move; a print 0.1 percentage point above consensus (headline or core) produces a 15 to 25 pip move; a print 0.2 percentage point above consensus produces a 30 to 60 pip move. The elasticity of the move to the surprise is roughly linear inside the +/- 0.3 percentage point band and roughly quadratic outside it.

The three components that carry the signal

The headline number is the input the market reacts to on the first minute. The signal, meaning the piece that matters for the setup two weeks out, is in the components. Three components carry most of the informational content:

  1. Final demand goods, energy sub-index. A large move in energy is expected (crude and diesel wholesale prices drop into this bucket with roughly a 30-day lag). What matters is whether the energy move is inside or outside the range that oil prices already predicted. The residual is the diagnostic.
  2. Final demand services, transportation and warehousing sub-index. Diesel prices feed here on a 30 to 60 day lag; port congestion and trucking capacity feed here real-time. A jump in this sub-index is the earliest signal that a supply-side inflation impulse is still moving through the system.
  3. Portfolio management fees sub-index. This is the smallest of the three but the most consequential for the PCE mapping, because it moves core PCE more than it moves core CPI. Portfolio management fees have a rough 0.55 correlation with the trailing quarter S&P 500 return, so a strong equity quarter typically shows up as a hot portfolio management print, which then shows up as a hotter core PCE than the core CPI implies.

What a pre-PPI Wednesday close tells you about the Thursday setup

Three signals worth reading:

Signal 1: dollar direction into the New York close on Wednesday. If DXY closes higher on the day but inside the prior range, the market is leaning slightly toward an upside surprise. If it closes lower on the day but inside the range, the market is leaning slightly toward a downside surprise. This is a directional signal, not a magnitude signal, and it works about 55 to 60 percent of the time (not much better than a coin flip, but enough to be useful in a distribution setup).

Signal 2: gold's Wednesday range width relative to its 20-day average. A gold range that is 40 percent or less of the 20-day average width is the position-cleaning signature. A range that is 80 percent or more of the 20-day average is the "the market has already reacted to something else" signature, which usually means the PPI print will get a diminished reaction because there is not enough dry powder left in positioning.

Signal 3: OIS front-end move in the 4:00 PM ET fixings. If the front-end moves less than 1bp on Wednesday's close, the setup is priced for an in-line print and the tail scenarios are asymmetric. If the front-end moves more than 2bp, the setup is priced for a surprise and the reaction to an in-line print will be muted.

The specific footprint on Wednesday September 9, 2026

Wednesday delivered the position-clearing signature. DXY closed at 99.05, 13 pips higher and inside the prior day's range, marginally leaning toward an upside surprise. Gold's range was 38 percent of its 20-day average, well inside the position-cleaning band. The 4:00 PM ET OIS fix on the September 17 SOFR contract moved 0.4bp, comfortably inside the "priced for in-line" bucket. Read together: the market is positioned for a print at or slightly above the +0.2 percent month-on-month consensus, and the elasticity of the DXY move to the surprise is roughly 60 pips per 0.1 percentage point of deviation above +0.3.
